the national debt. his political base is cranky about the war in afghanistan unhappy he failed to end the bush tax cuts and worried they may be able to cut spending significantly to win an increase in the debt ceiling. he must win his base to have hope of reelection but he knows if the independents who backed him in 2008 and if they don't come back his base isn't enough. even as they gave ground in spending and debt with negotiations with congressional republicans he talked about taxing the rich in the white house news conference this week. by today he was con sill tory again and confident with a deal. he is against kicking an issue down the road. he's the same guy who wanted a debt ceiling increase with no action on spending. eases like a man who took two dates to the prom and is trying to make two people happy. he may not pull it off but he is dancing as fast as he can. >> what about balance in the final deal? >>>> republicans -- the president in congress and democratic party on spending but the president fears that if he gives too much on spending and doesn't give anything seemingly in the

turmoil in afghanistan just as the united states prepares to withdraw thousands of troops. look at this. a fight broke out yesterday as members of the afghan parliament debated whether to impeach the corrupt president there hamid karzai. the brawl raised new concerns about whether the afghan government is in in any way ready to take control of its own security. president obama announced plans to withdraw more than 30,000 u.s. troops by next september. lawyers for the man once considered a top contender for the french presidency met today with prosecutors who are reconsidering the sexual assault charges against him. this thing is blowing up. strauss-kahn's lawyers say it was a productive meeting but the manhattan district attorney's office insists it has not made any decisions on the case. a court allowed strauss-kahn to post bail last week after the prosecutors admitted they had doubts about the credibility of the hotel maid who accused him of attacking her. i say doubts. adam shapiro is with us. we might we hear they have to drop this whole thing because it looks like an unmittty mess.

? look at that. a fight erupting in afghanistan's parliament. first, you saw the shoe go flying. then the water bottle goes flying. then punches are thrown. and that's between two female lawmakers before the colleagues finally pulled them apart. now, this followed a discussion about alleged rocket attacks in pakistan. that's something pakistan denies. in montana, the governor declaring a state of emergency in seven counties because of a ruptured pipeline that caused 42,000 gallons of oil to gush into the river last week. governor disagree about how widespread the oil is. the state says it has found oil 90 miles from the leak. now to ohio where a freight train traveling from cleveland to cincinnati leaked more than 1,700 gallons of diesel from its engine before anyone even realized it, crews are scrambling to clean up the mess. they say about 30 of those gallons spiel spiled in s spill when the train stopped on a bridge in downtown columbus. and the dow finishing in the green, up 56 points. let's go to allison kosik live at the stock exchange. i know we're going to get several jo
